Brooks Hatch: Back from Pullman Comments

Back safe and sound from our adventure on the Palouse, one of the Blog’s favorite places to visit.

Had a few pops and good eats in downtown Moscow on Friday night; a great walk through the Idaho campus on Saturday morning;  easy and convenient tailgating before the game (a little Captain Morgan takes the bite out of that Palouse wind); cheap tickets ($45 combined for three of us), and an easy drive back right afterwards, so we were back in Corvallis by 1 a.m. Sunday and missed the snowstorm.

There was absolutely nobody at Martin Stadium and there was absolutely no buzz. The best thing I could compare it to is the Northern Illinois-OSU game in Parker Stadium in 1996, except in that instance the home team won in a blowout.

* We ran into former OSU assistant basketball coach Leroy Washington and his wife on Friday night. Their son Jayson is an outstanding athlete at Moscow High and will play football at Idaho next fall.

Leroy coached at Wyoming and at Idaho after leaving OSU but is presently out of coaching and working in the automotive business in Moscow.

* Also saw Beavers’ legend Jonathan Smith on the OSU sideline, but he moved before we could get his attention to say hello. He’s the quarterbacks coach at Idaho, which can finish 8-4 if it defeats Utah State this Saturday.

The attendance at Sunday’s OSU Wrestling Endowment duals against Wisconsin and Boise State was 3,018 and approximately $30,000 was raised for the fund.

Six OSU volleyball players made the Pac-10’s all-academic team. Players must have a minimum 3.0 overall grade-point average and be either a starter or significant contributor to be considered.

Senior Bree Knitter (sociology, Spanish) and junior Jill Sawatzky (business administration) earned first-team honors. It’s the third academic honor for Knitter, the second for Sawatzky.

Seniors Camilla Ah-Hoy and Lexie Rathgeber,  junior Kiersten Sambrailo and and sophomore Betsy Devich were honorable mention. Ah-Hoy and Rathgeber are three-time honorees.

The Corvallis Knights of the West Coast League have signed junior catcher Miles Kizer of Washington and first baseman D.J. Johnson of Western Oregon for the 2010 season.

Kizer hit .390 with 52 RBI for Glendale (Ariz.) CC and was named first-team NJCAA Division II All-America in 2009.

Johnson, who played his first two years at Mt. Hood, is a two-year Knights veteran. A left-handed batter, he hit .298 for the Knights in 2009, with 13 RBIs, and led Corvallis in HBP with 14.

The Knights have also signed pitchers Nathan Eisenhauer of Pacific Lutheran University and Jeremy Burright of Mt. Hood CC, a West Albany High graduate, to 10-day contracts.

And finally, here’s a great video clip of the last play of the Richmond-William & Mary game this past Saturday. Trust me, it’s not easy to find the score of that game from a parking lot in Pullman, but we managed!
