Brooks Hatch: Wednesday update Comments
The Oregon State women’s basketball team returns to action tonight with a 5 p.m. game against the University of Houston at the Cougars’ Hofheinz Pavilion.
The Cougars (2-0) should provide a sterner test than Cal Poly did last Friday in OSU’s opener. The Beavers won 71-61 but hit only 15 of 32 free throws; had they made their customary 70 percent OSU would have blown the Mustangs out.
“We beat Houston pretty soundly at home last year (69-47); they were young, how they’re a year older and it will be another tough matchup for us,” OSU coach LaVonda Wagner said.
“We have to continue to grow and understand how to play. We are very new in spots and we don’t understand what we’re looking for. We make the wrong cuts at the wrong time. that’s all experience.
“The thing now is put them in pressure situations in practice, make free throws mean more so it matters. (In the opener) we got away with (poor FT shooting) because we rebounded.”
Sophomore forward Kirsten Tilleman described the Cal Poly game as an “eye-opener” after two easy exhibition victories.
“Our exhibition games showed we could score, but basically we got away with a lot of stuff we weren’t able to get away with” against Cal Poly, she said. “It will only get harder from here.
“I’m glad we were able to get (Cal Poly) off the bat because it showed us what we need to work on – not just our physical game, but our mental game.”

The complete 2010 Oregon State baseball schedule isn’t available yet because the Beavers are still waiting for a contract to be returned. Oregon, however, released its schedule and its list of LOI signees earlier this week; interesting that the Ducks didn’t sign one player from oregon.
The Beavers will play at Oregon at 6 p.m. April 27; will host the Ducks on May 7-9 at Goss Stadium, and play another non-league game at PGE Park at 6 p.m. May 26.
The teams played six times last season; one game was added after both teams lost regularly-scheduled games against other opponents to rainouts.
