Brooks Hatch: Tuesday update Comments

A few leftover notes from Oregon State’s 113-35 victory over Concordia in an exhibition women’s basketball game at Gill Coliseum:

* Senior guard Julie Futch hit 3 of 5 three-pointers and scored a career-high 14 points.  She also had four assists, a steal, and nary a turnover in 22 minutes.

“Julie did a great job running the point, and she was also a threat offensively,” coach LaVonda Wagner said. “It’s been a long time coming and she played with some confidence.”

Futch is also fully healthy. Ankle and eye injuries limited her to a career-low 19 games and 5.4 minutes per game in 2008-09.

“It’s huge” to have her at 100 percent, Wagner said, because she can play all three guard positions. “Julie’s had a lot of injuries and setbacks. It’s great to see her play with some confidence and really embrace her role, anywhere I need her to play.”

* Wagner said OSU’s inside game is still a “puzzle.”

“I’m still trying to figure that whole thing out,” she said. “Anita Burdick gave us some good minutes. Kirsten Tilleman showed great versatility, she crashed the offensive boards (5), had some assists (2), got some steals (1) and had some blocks (2).

“Tayler Champion did a nice job,” with 12 points, five rebounds and an assist in 18 minutes. “We have to continue to have that presence on the inside.”

* The Beavers play Lewis & Clark at 4 p.m. Sunday in their final exhibition. They open the regular season at 7 p.m. Nov. 13 against Cal Poly, also at Gill.

* The Beavers nonleague schedule is ranked as the easiest in the Pac-10 by veteran Bay Area women’s basketball writer Jake Curtis.

The OSU women’s soccer team plays at Arizona State at 6 p.m. Friday and at Arizona at 11 a.m. on Sunday. The Beavers’  RPI is 19 and they are in excellent position for their first NCAA berth since 1994 with a solid performance this weekend.

—————————–

The Oregonian reports that former OSU wide receiver Mike Hass has been added to the Seattle Seahawks’ 53-man roster and may play this Sunday. It’s about time; after watching the usual assortment of NFL chucklehead receivers drop pass after pass  every Sunday (especially with the Browns) s0 one can only wonder why it took so long.
