It’s alive! Yes, we are back Comments

Time to crank this thing up again after a nice mental health break (the effects of which were quickly destroyed by the stress of learning how to use the G-T’s new online system, and two nights of production work).

So it goes.

Some news and observations after a whirlwind two weeks that saw The Blog in Wyoming on Aug. 21; in Idaho on Aug. 22; in Oregon on Aug. 23, and in Houston at 6:30 a.m. and in New York City by noon on Aug. 24.

Felt like a touring rock star, without the posse of adoring fans and obligatory huge bankroll. (And by the way, the new Yankee Stadium is awesome, even at $10 a beer.)

Until this past Saturday, The Blog had seen more Wyoming football practice than Oregon State football practice. Since it’s not our beat anymore, we don’t make it over to Prothro Field/Reser Stadium very often.

But since everyone else on our staff had their predictions in the G-T on Sunday, here’s mine: 8-4 overall, 5-4 in the Pac-10, and another bowl game.

And if Sean Canfield can remember that the first rule of a starting quarterback is similar to first rule of a doctor – do no harm – a 9-3 mark is entirely possible.

We watched the Comcast replay of the 2007 victory at No. 2 California on Saturday night/Sunday morning, a game in which Canfield played efficiently and intelligently and was turnover-free. That Sean Canfield – the same guy who reappeared at UCLA and Arizona in 2008 – can win a lot of games.

OSU assistant baseball coach Marty Lees told The Blog over the summer that the Beavers were still recruiting a middle infielder. It appears they’ve found one in versatile Andy Quiring of Chico (Calif.) High/Feather River CC, an infielder/outfielder who appears targeted for second base here.

OSU baseball SID Hank Hager said the reporting date for fall practice is Sept. 8. Once the staff is sure who is coming, who isn’t, who is returning and who isn’t returning, we’ll have an updated roster.

The Beavers must be at 35 players by opening day, 2010, and not a moment before.

As we stated in a previous blog, we’re covering OSU Olympic sports and other assignments/production work this fall, starting with the OSU-San Jose State men’s soccer game at 5:30 p.m. Friday at Lorenz Field, the home opener for new coach Steve Simmons.

The women’s team’s home opener is also on Friday, against Nevada at 8 p.m., but we’ll probably be back in the office by the time that game starts.

We’ll also have some volleyball, women’s soccer and cross country  coverage along the way. The spikers are 2-0 after a Saturday night victory over No. 24 Colorado State; here’s a report of that match from the Fort Collins Coloradoan.
